A History Of

Action in the North Atlantic is the first full-length release by the Halifax based four-piece A History Of. Expanding on their debut EP, Victory Atlas (Noyes, 2007), Action in the North Atlantic unpacks A History Of’s signature vocal trade offs, dangerous rhythms and sharp bursts of guitar. The album finds room to breathe amidst the punk rock ethos. It reaches into many directions and moods within the genre, from math rock to experimental punk. Accelerated tracks that clock less than three minutes like “DC Heat” show restlessness to be a surviving characteristic of the band, while the steady march of songs like “National Tectonic” and “Dagger Woods” anchor the album at a deliberate pace. Dynamic and innovative playing is best expressed on the psychedelic blow-out of the album’s closing track, “Position Fixing & Dead Reckoning.” A charging and frenetic lament on apathy, Mark Grundy (bass/vocals) asks, “Who am I to stand for what I’m not?” before the song descends into an experimental break-down, akin to Dirty-era Sonic Youth.
A History Of features members of The Plan, Tomcat Combat and Gamma Gamma Rays. In their short history, they have completed three tours of Eastern Canada, secured spots with such diverse acts as Crystal Antlers and Jay Reatard, made a movie and lost one bass player to a horrific accident. Action in the North Atlantic is an analog recording engineered by J. LaPointe (North of America) and features artwork by the acclaimed east coast design team, YoRodeo. A History Of has raised the bar for itself on its first studio-made full-length album and finally, the intensity and power of their live performances can be told on record.
